How to Save Energy When You are Working During the Day

It comes as no surprise that the economy is sluggish and what that means for most of us is a need to trim our bills. If you have been wondering how to save energy, one of the largest consumers of energy are our HVAC systems, so that seems like a great place to start. If you’re considering upgrading your system with a more energy-friendly SEER rating, that’s great, but if not, installing a programmable thermostat is one of the best steps you can take.

Which Programmable Thermostat Fits Your Lifestyle?

This is not a one-size-fits-all device. You can choose between three different styles, depending on your schedule. They’re all easy to program. Some will let you know when to change your filter.

  • 7-day thermostats. This type affords the most flexibility and is a great choice for families whose schedules are somewhat chaotic; you can address each day of the week individually.
  • 5+2-day thermostats. For families or individuals that are focused on how to save energy when most weeks follow the same trend (working days and weekends follow the same schedule), this type fits the bill.
  • 5-1-1 thermostats. If your work days are typical but your Saturdays and Sundays are different, this is the model for you. A good example is a family that sleeps in on Saturday but gets up to go to church on Sunday.

How to Save Energy With Your Thermostat

Everybody likes to stay in the comfort zone but that doesn’t mean your entire home has to remain that way 24/7. Programming your thermostat to only be in the comfort zone when the occupants are home is the goal. Otherwise, it should be set to cycle the HVAC system infrequently, if at all. When you need to either begin heating or cooling to get into the zone, allow about 30 minutes in advance of you coming home, waking up, etc.
