It’s Summertime, and the Savings Are Easier With Energy Star

We are all looking to save a little money where we can and when it comes to keeping your home cool during the summer, the place to begin is with an Energy Star cooling system. Because these appliances are designed with efficiency in mind, they are not only better for the environment, they are better for your wallet, too.

Energy Star is a voluntary program through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that helps consumers save money and protect the environment through energy efficiency.

There are a range of options to choose from for cooling your home or business. Cooling options that qualify for Energy Star have a higher Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) and Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) than most conventional models. Central air conditioners that qualify meet this standard. Most central air conditioning systems have both an indoor and an outdoor component. If you decide to get a new system, it is best to replace both components to guarantee maximum efficiency.

Another cooling option is a heat pump. While it may sound counter intuitive, heat pumps can both heat and cool your residence or business. In addition to the EER and SEER, qualifying heat pumps rank higher in their Heating and Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) which is simply a measure of heating efficiency. There are two varieties of heat pump to choose from: electric air-source heat pumps and geothermal heat pumps.

Geothermal heat pumps differ from air-source heat pumps in that they draw heating and cooling from the earth rather than from outside air. Some geothermal heat pumps also heat water. Installing a heat pump can be pretty costly but it can result in serious monthly savings on utility bills.
