Saving Energy This Summer: 9 Ways to Beat the Heat Without Busting the Budget

Great weather and lots of sunny days make Fort Collins one of the best places to live in the United States. But like the Rockies, summer temperatures can get right up there. Fortunately, you can take measures to save energy. None of the following nine tips will bust your budget:

1. Start at the top: A poorly insulated attic can radiate heat into your living space, raising your cooling costs by as much as 40 percent. Make sure your attic insulation levels are adequate.

2. Keep the hot air outside. Check for spots where hot air is sneaking in. Check around windows, doors and kitchen and bath vents. Some caulk and expanding foam insulation can put you well on your way toward saving energy this summer.

3. If you haven’t had your air conditioner tuned up yet, do it now. Your expert HVAC technician will ensure that your system is running the way it should, and this will help to keep your cooling costs in line.

4. Keep your kitchen cool. Run your dishwasher and clothes dryer at night. Consider using your outside grill more often. All appliances that generate heat are work against you when it comes to keeping your home cool.

5. See the light. If you haven’t switched to energy-efficient bulbs yet, now’s the time.

6. Block solar gain. Check into reflective coatings for your windows. Alternatively, keep your drapes or blinds closed during the hottest part of the day. You might also want to consider planting trees or bushes near your home.

7. Use a programmable thermostat. Set your thermostat to go up a few degrees when you leave for work in the morning and to go down again shortly before you arrive home. Thermostats can also be programmed for weekends and vacations. They’re easy to install and inexpensive.

8. Run your air conditioner on fan at night, or don’t run your air conditioner at all, and just open the bedroom windows.

9. Back to basics. Ceiling fans won’t actually cool the air. But the breeze will evaporate the moisture on your skin and make you feel cooler.
