How Your Programmable Thermostat Can Help You Stay Warmer This Winter

The winter is approaching and you will want to keep your home warm without breaking the bank. If you have an old dial-type thermostat, you may have been keeping your temperature set low to try and save energy. A programmable thermostat can help with energy savings while maintaining a more comfortable temperature during busy times in your home.

There are times when a more efficient temperature setting would be acceptable. During sleep hours or when everyone is away from home just to name a few. Family vacations are another time when the comfort level can be reduced to save on energy expenses. With a programmable thermostat, this can be accomplished with a setting that will bring up the temperature to a more comfortable level shortly before necessary. This provides a comfortable home when necessary and energy savings also.

There are several types of programmable thermostats available to homeowners. Each with different programming options.

Types of Thermostats

  • 7-day thermostats – Every day of the week can be programmed differently with this option. There are four periods available for each day. A busy family with changing schedules can benefit from this flexible thermostat.
  • 5+1+1 thermostats – Saturday can be programmed different from Sunday and weekdays can have another set of programs. Households with many weekend activities will find this type of thermostat useful.
  • 5+2 thermostats –  One set of programs is allowed for weekdays and another for weekends. Less flexible than the other models, this option is still very capable of saving you money on energy while providing comfortable temperatures when necessary.

Modern programmable thermostats have many features available. Low battery indicators, easy to read displays and wireless control with your smartphone are just a few features of today’s thermostats. Late model thermostats are capable of warning you when a filter change if due for your HVAC system. A warm winter is possible for your family without a large increase in energy costs if you program your thermostat properly.
