Programmable Thermostat ‘Do’s’ to Save You Money
Using a programmable thermostat in your Fort Collins area home is a great way to save on energy costs while maintaining home comfort, as long as you use it correctly.
A digital thermostat used incorrectly can actually cost you more money than setting a static temperature on an older analog thermostat. This happens when homeowners, assuming they’ll reap big savings from using a programmable thermostat to set energy-saving temperatures when they’re away from home or asleep, will reward themselves with unnecessarily higher (or lower) temperatures when they’re at home. Follow these rules for using a programmable thermostat correctly:
- Program energy-saving temperatures when you’re not around or are sleeping. If you know you will not be at home all day, why spend the extra money to keep the house at the same temperature? It takes a lot less energy to set back the temperature several degrees than it does to keep it constant throughout the day. A good rule of thumb is that for an eight-hour stretch where you reduce your heating or cooling, you will use 1 percent less energy per degree of temperature reduction. So if you program your thermostat heat setting overnight five degrees lower during the heating season, you save 5 percent on your energy bill.
- Keep to your set temperatures when you are home. If you’re tempted to frequently override programmed temperatures or put the set temperature on hold indefinitely, you’ll defeat the energy-saving purpose of your programmable thermostat. When you set your morning, daytime, evening, and night temperatures, keep in mind your schedule, and base the time frame for daytime and night around it.
- DO check out the federal Energy Star program for suggestions. They have a lot of suggestions as to how you can use your home’s HVAC system to save the most money. They also have a sample program that shows how to operate a programmable thermostat.
