Disinfect Your Home Humidifier with White Vinegar
One of the most important tasks in home humidifier maintenance is making sure your device is clean and free of bacteria, mildew and mineral buildup. Although you should already be changing the water everyday and performing routine cleanings, there are times when you’re going to have to give your humidifier a deep clean. Fortunately, it’s easy to disinfect your humidifier with white vinegar.
First, unplug your humidifier, drain the water and disassemble it. Every humidifier model is handled differently, so be sure to follow the owners’ guide. Next, mix equal parts distilled white vinegar and water into a spray bottle. Spray this solution inside the tank. Then, let it sit for a few minutes, scrubbing it with a washcloth, sponge, or soft-bristled brush.
You can also fill a bowl or sink with the vinegar cleaning solution and use it to soak small pieces. Soak these components for at least 45 minutes, or longer if necessary, in order to dissolve most mineral deposits. After they’ve finished soaking, use a small brush or toothbrush to remove any remaining mineral deposits. You can use this soaking process on the filter as well.
Once the cleaning is complete, pour the vinegar out of your tank and rinse the filter, as well as any other smaller pieces. Let the tank and all of the other humidifier parts dry before reassembling. With these directions and a little bit of white vinegar, you should have no problem making sure your humidifier is clean and purifying your air all day, every day.
