Energy-Saving Tips for a Greener Winter

The Fort Collins area can inspire everyone to think about the environment. When you’re surrounded by so much beautiful land, it’s hard not to want to take better care of it by living green. Green living not only helps care for our community, but also saves you money. Consider these energy-saving tips to reduce the energy you use this winter.

  • Yearly maintenance on your heating equipment can keep it running at its most efficient. An HVAC professional can not only take care of basic maintenance tasks, but can catch potential issues before they become a problem.
  • Install a programmable thermostat. Unlike a traditional thermostat, a programmable thermostat allows you to maintain your home’s temperature without your intervention. It can automatically turn your heater down while you are at work, then warm the house when you’ll be coming home. This saves both energy and money on your heating bills.
  • Investigate a zoning system for your home. A zoning system utilizes multiple thermostats to control different areas, or “zones”, in your home. In this way, you have more granular control over the heating in your house. Areas that see less use can be kept cooler, while the system delivers heat to the rooms you spend the most time in.
  • Evaluate the temperature you keep your thermostat set to. Even lowering it by one or two degrees can have a significant impact on your energy use. Many recommendations state a temperature between 68 and 70 degrees while you’re home, and 55 to 60 degrees while you are away.
  • Change the filters in your heating system once a month. This protects your equipment, betters your air quality and saves money as well.
  • Check your home’s insulation to be sure it’s adequate for your needs. While it’s best to do this if you choose to renovate your home, insufficient insulation can elevate your heating bills.
